Recovery Audit Contractors (RAC):
Overview and Preparation

Presented by - Lisa Jenkins, MPT, BBA, CHC

Thursday – January 27, 2011 | 1:00-2:00 PM EST

CMS Recovery Audit Contractor (RAC) audits pose a considerable threat to the revenues and profit margins of skilled nursing facilities, home health agencies, hospices as well as any other healthcare provider that files Medicare claims.  These audits can include extensive investigations, complex appeals processes, and stiff fines. Prepare now for increased scrutiny of your Medicare claims by attending this webinar, and learn how to prepare for and respond to the RAC system efficiently and effectively.

Objectives

  • Discuss how the RACs came about
  • Describe the purpose of the RACs
  • State the RAC process
  • Explain the five levels of appeals
  • Summarize expected outcomes of a successful implementation of a RAC program
  • Explain the most effective way to prepare for RAC medical record requests
  • Discuss CMS lessons learned from the 3-year demonstration project
  • Review GAO findings regarding the RAC program

For Nurses
As the healthcare reform debate continues, understanding the RAC system is important to all those involved with the Medicare billing process. In January 2010 the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) launched the RAC program to help prevent the overpayment of Medicare claims and recover previous overpayments.

All healthcare entities that bill Medicare are subject to periodic audits. Therefore, nursing supervisors, nursing case managers, DONs, and other management-level nurses should be knowledgeable about the RAC system and its role in the Medicare billing process. Following this in-depth webinar they will be able to identify how RACS evolved, the current system, and how to implement a successful implementation process.
