Course Description:

The purpose of this Introductory Level course is to educate healthcare professionals on the guidelines involving patient falls, the impact it has on the patient and facility, factors that cause falls and prevention methods. This course was authored by Deanna Gray-Miceli, PhD., GNP-BC, CRNP, FAANP. This course corresponds to Federal Regulations: F323, L524, L559, L560, G117, G121.

Learning Objectives:

  • Describe the impact of patient falls both for the patient and the facility.
  • List the goals that healthcare facilities must meet in order to reduce the risk of patient harm resulting from falls.
  • Define the healthcare professional's role in implementing a fall prevention program.
  • Utilize fall risk assessment tools and conduct post-fall assessments.
  • Recognize intrinsic risk factors and implement evidence-based interventions, including specific physiological and psychological conditions.
  • Recognize environmental hazards and apply extrinsic interventions.
  • State what needs to be included in the communication and documentation of patient falls and the importance of the family's role.
