Group Activities for Wheelchair Management
(Participants include individuals who utilize a wheelchair as their primary means of mobility)
Purpose of Group Activities for Wheelchair Mobility
- Educate residents on manipulation/operation all wheelchair parts/accessories
- Increase ability to propel wheelchair on even/uneven surfaces and/or advanced challenges (e.g., curbs, ramps, stairs, elevators)
- Increase ability to transfer to/from wheelchair and multiple surfaces
- Techniques to relieve pressure points with prolonged wheelchair sitting
- Education regarding proper sitting posture/wheelchair fit
- Education in adaptive wheelchair devices and their use
- Education regarding types of wheelchair cushion to avoid skin breakdown
Contraindications
- Inadequate/limited wheelchair sitting tolerance for participation in activity
- Significant memory impairment
- Inability to follow one or two-step commands
