Equine therapy can make a difference in children’s lives
- Mon, Jun 11

There is physical therapy, occupational therapy, massage therapy and then, there is horse therapy. While each of these fields is unique, they all exist to make a difference in people’s lives.

Florida’s Kiddy Up Farms is one place where children with physical, emotional or learning problems can receive assistance through equine therapy, according to Kiddy Up’s website. For youths who cannot walk, simply riding a horse can help build everything from self-esteem and trust to balance and friendship.

Paige Leflar is among the children who have visited Kiddy Up to reap the benefits of equine therapy, the Tampa Bay Times reported. Paige suffers from acromelic frontonasal dysplasia, a genetic disorder that affected the way in which her body formed in the womb. Despite the fact that the 3-year-old’s legs have been amputated below the knee and she cannot speak, she is somewhat of an extrovert and loves horses.

When Paige rides, she holds a pink plastic hoop to strengthen her arms. This is just one example of how physical therapy is being enhanced through the use of horses.

If professionals in therapeutic fields are curious to learn about new ways of treating patients, they may want to look into occupational, speech or physical therapy continuing education options.
